Chapter Nine

The door slammed shut in my face with a deafening boom. And, for a second, I couldn’t get it together, desperation, need, joy swirled together in the perfect form…but rage won…

Rage always won.

I dropped my shoulder and lunged, slamming into the door with a bone-jarring crunch. The handle refused to budge. Goddamn fucking metal. I gripped the handle and twisted. “Redemption! I saw you, you gutless prick. Open the fucking door.”

There was no answer, only the grip on the other side of the handle. I shoved and pushed, driving my shoulders into the door time and time again. “I’ll tell the Director about the drugs. I’ll fucking tell everyone!”

The door opened with a sudden rush. I fell forward, gripping the handle for my fucking life, and stumbled into the room.

“Where is she?” I spun toward him, staring into dark Unseelie eyes. “Where is Alma?”

He shook his head, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

I stumbled around the dressing room, yanking open the curtains to the cubicles before I spun. “You…you fucking know. Lying, selfish bastard. What have you done to her?”

I skimmed my waist, fingers dancing along my belt as I dragged the obsidian blade free. Unseelie or not. I’d kill him. Stab him in the fucking heart until I sent his sorry ass back to wherever he came from.

He shook his head, glanced at the weapon in my hand, and then stilled. “Where is she, Redemption? And this time, no lies.” I glanced toward the walls, searching the red and pink gowns that hung from the hangers. Sparkle and fur could hide someone that small.

“I want you to listen to me, Lorn. Look at me…Lorn.”

I wrenched my gaze back to his voice. He lifted a hand and took a slow step. “You know me…right? We’ve known each other for a long time now. We were lovers once, remember? Before you told me to leave.”

“You cheated,” the truth fucking burned. I’d never said the words out loud. Never wanted to hear them. “I caught you, all the late-night calls to work. All the secret meetings. I followed you one night.” I lifted my gaze, finding those fucking cruel eyes. “You never went to The Circle.”

His pale skin turned ashen. Torture twisted his face. A face I loved…once. He swallowed, and then swallowed once more. Pain etched husky words. “I’d never hurt you, never betray you. I want you to listen to me. You’re sick, Lorn. You touched the drug, remember? Last week when you were called in to help with the battle of the witches, and today…”

My gaze slipped. I tried to remember, tried to think.

“I’m so sorry for that. So fucking sorry. But your mind…it’s playing tricks on you. You feel different, don’t you?”

I flinched at those words and lifted my gaze.

“You feel different, don’t you?” He took a step, hand reaching for the blade in my hand.

Was he right? Was this all in my head? I glanced at the mirror, staring at the reflection of the door.
